Unpacking White Privilege

I believe that it was personally important for her to create an inventory of the unearned white privileges because a lot of people don’t even realize the advantage they have over people of color. Mostly all white people understand that they have certain advantages to being white, (unless they are an arrogant asshole of course) but not all white people can see how many advantages they actually have. As I was reading the list that McIntosh put together I myself didn’t realize how many of these advantages I had. McIntosh really opened my eyes to a lot of advantages that I didn’t even realize I had, and the disadvantages that people of color have. It truly saddens me that this is how things are, and some people don’t even recognize how big of an issue this is. This inventory of unearned white privileges is so important because it opens the mind to so many privileges that I know people don’t see that they have. If people took these into consideration, maybe we could start to make changes to this. People of color worry, and realize these things all of the time. It is so crazy to me that people take advantage of their advantages because they are white and they don’t even realize it. People of color have to go through these things every day while it doesn’t even cross a white persons mind. It’s so unfair because there is not even a difference biologically at all between black and white people besides the color of their skin. It doesn’t make sense to me at all, and I think this article is very important to make people realize these advantages that white people don’t think twice about.

  1. agree with you completely. I am a person of color and I see the privileges have yet they are completely blinded by it. I understand that it is not those people’s fault that they don’t realize it because they were just born into it. People of color realizes this due to the fact they aren’t given the same opportunity as others do. This issue is something that happens every day in the work force, school and every day life. We just don’t notice as much because we are so used it. Though it is often that white people don’t realize they have certain privileges but it is also unfair to people of color who aren’t given the same chances. This is an issue and I think we should realize it and put some action into. It’s not fair that we are a nation of multicultural yet some people are being treated unfair due to their skin color. This could lead to a bigger issue and should be solved. Everyone deserves the same opportunity no matter what their skin color is. It is the only way I think we will grow as a nation overall.
