Matthews, Dylan. “Everything you need to
know about the war on poverty.” Washington
Post. The Washington Post Company, 8 Jan. 2014. Web. 1 Mar. 2016.
The
Washington Post’s article “Everything you need to know about the war on
poverty” by Dylan Matthews was an article based on Lyndon B. Johnson’s
presidency and how it effected and started the war on poverty during the
1960’s. The web article mainly focuses on how effective Johnson’s war on
poverty has been.
Matthews’
article is useful to us because it provides information not only from history
but also from statistics taken over time, from the Johnson presidency during
1967 through 2012. The evidence given through the statistics then shows how
Johnson’s war on poverty has been effective. The article also tries to
communicate to its readers through explanation in its words, charts and
statistics given that the war on poverty has so far been highly effective.
However towards the end of this article Matthews shows to be a bit biased when
on point seven he starts to push for expansion of anti-poverty programs and
ending his argument by pushing for a raise in minimum wage, where he explains
how researchers have found that it reduces poverty.
