The war on poverty was declared by former United
States president Lyndon B. Johnson. The phrase War on poverty is a set of initiatives
and programs to help cut the debt of the united states in the late 1960`s by
half. The task focused on four major programs to help stabilize the
unemployment rate and help the economy. The four main programs that where
established where the Social Security Acts of 1965, the Food Stamp Act of 1964,
the Economic opportunity Act of 1964, and The Elementary and Secondary
Education Act signed in 1965. Many of programs that LBJ installed are still
present now. One of the many reasons why LBJ declared a war on poverty in 1965
where from the influences of civil activist groups, mainly the naacp. Poverty
did decrease over the years, but the real question to be answered of whether the
war on poverty actually contributed anything. My belief is no since the Nixon administration
cancelled most of the programs LBJ put in order. The decrease of poverty was a
group effort that lasted over the years that is still being fought today.
