War on Poverty

""The War on Poverty" - Boundless Open Textbook." Boundless. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Mar. 2016.

Having served as a formal Texas school teacher, President Johnson was exposed to a lot of poverty. He saw a need that he thought had to be fulfilled in order to advance as a society and you could not simply leave the impoverished populace to wallow in their poverty. Instead, he launched a new bill that provided much needed funds to make better schools as well as provide them with government benefits so they could finally buy many of the things necessary for success. Furthermore, it gave people hope, they were finally recognized and people began to take notice that it was a real issue in today’s world. In conjunction to government benefits, the bill also employed thousands on people in poverty with massive public works projects that included building bridges, buildings etc.

The author starts by giving a brief layout of the bill and why it was vital to the US economy.  He/she then broke the bill down into different pieces and analyzed them more closely that way the reader could grasp a better understanding of the text. The author then goes on to provide statics on the “Impact of poverty” which shows that poverty in the early 1960’s was between 15% and 17.3% then as soon as the public started to take notice it dropped all the way down to 11.1% in 1964. As soon as people began to take notice, so did the government and the issue could no longer be ignored. However, the thought of a “ welfare state” took over the in the 80’s and 90’s which scared many people and many of the government programs were dismantled.
