Bella and Katniss

The author of this article makes very interesting points regarding if Bella from Twilight and Katniss from the Hunger games were ever to meet. The author did a very good job of finding the pros and weaknesses of both women and how that could help or hurt them if they were ever to meet. What make’s the two different is the situations they are in. One is dropped into an arena where she must fight for survival and the other is living in a world with ware wolves and Vampires. At the beginning the authors seems to noticeably favor Katniss. This is because the author sees that her world is a war zone and is deadly when she needs to be. She has a lot to fight for in the movie. I have not seen the movie personally but I know Katniss sacrifices her own personal well being to protect a loved one going into the arena, which gives her a lot to fight for. Bella on the other hand has an interesting set of skills. She is a Vampire but can only use her Vampire “powers” in a certain situation and that is to protect her loved ones. At first the author sides with Katniss because of what I would call “grit” she can roll up her sleeves and get it done. But toward the end of the article she starts siding with Bella because she becomes very powerful. I don’t think the author picked a side in this argument but rather said the positives of both Bella and Katniss.

  1. Just wanted to start by saying I enjoyed reading your article and I agree with you on many of the points you made. Before I get into that I wanted to start by saying I don't know why this article has anything to do with feminism. I feel like people think way too deeply in these things and force topics such as the one we read which are pointless. Anyways, I agree that at the beginning the author does seem to favor Katniss a good bit more than her counterpart. Katniss life is by far worse than that of Bella ( never seen the twilight series) from what I have found off the internet. Katniss lives under a Dictatorship that forces kids to kill each other for sport. Bella on the other hand is a depressed girl who "wants sex". I believe the public hates Bella not because she is " girly" but because she is an annoying prick. I like how you used the word " grit" and I think thats an excellent word to describe Katniss in all her vigor. Towards the end like you stated the author has a shift of feelings and seems to side with Bella. I'm sure if she is necessarily siding with Bella, but merely stating that indeed Bella is stronger. However, Bella wouldn't be able to hurt Katniss because she is to " girly" and Katniss would take advantage of this and drive an arrow through her heart.

  2. I agree with you that at the beginning of the article the author seems to side with Katniss without any hesitation. However, near the very end the author's opinion seems to switch completely. My question lies within his conclusion. It is unclear to me who he actually sides with. After ranting on and on about how Katniss possess such noble and strong traits while Bella is an extreme "girly girl" you would think that his stand in the matter is obvious. Again, the author even states in the first paragraph that, "unless Edward or Jacob came to her rescue...Bella is going to get stomped." The hypothetical situation he was referring to here is if Bella and Katniss were to fight who would win. It seems as though we get a straight forward answer right off the back, but as you keep reading the confusion sets in. We go from picturing a girly, highly dependent Bella to one who knows her desires and isn't afraid to go obtain them. The roles also reverse for Katniss because her image towards the end is portrayed as more passive than Bella. I just wished that the author would have been more clear in his conclusion instead of this flipping back-and-forth feel he caused at the end. It was an interesting article nonetheless, but I still wish there would have been a set/precise answer.

  3. I really liked your blog post. I agree with you. The author did make it seem like they were against Bella in the beginning and in the title, but as I continued to read, I saw that indeed he was just saying the pros and cons of both characters. In relation to the feminist view on Bella, I think that what feminists think are incorrect. I feel that both characters have qualities that are necessary in every female teen's life. Yes, girls should be courageous and strong, but we must remember that young teenage girls also have a softer, more delicate side to them.
