In the Ted talk video Richard Wilkinson spoke about economic
inequalities. First off, Wilkinson demonstrates some graph illustrating
different countries and how they are affected by Infant Mortality rates (IMRs),
Life expectancy, Imprisonment and various other topics. Wilkinson argues that
all these problems are correlated to one simple thing, economic inequality. I
agree with Wilkinson, the bigger that gap between people the more problems it
is going to have. If more people were equal they would have the same
opportunities in life. But when they are so far apart people are not going to
be equal in any way. If a person is poor she will get subsidies, and if she has
children she will have more subsidies. Another way to see is if someone can’t
buy something because they don’t make enough money, they are going to steal,
making the crime rate go up and the imprisonment go up. Exactly like Wilkinson had
shared. From what I said people might argue that I want a society where people
make the same amount of money, which is not true. I do not believe that
economic equality will ever be achieved. I don’t believe it will be achieved because
people are lazy people want others to make them rich and only a few handful
actually work hard to get the economic status they want to achieve. Japan is a
great example when it comes to economic inequality because it goes against it.
Japan has the smallest gap between the rich and the poor and it is because
everyone works hard. Everyone has something to do and achieve. Even when they
do not have the resources for it. Coming up with solutions is not easy, and
economic inequality causes multiple problems in our society today, but the only
way for it to go away is for the people to stop depending and others and
actually go out and do things. Start a product, sell furniture, anything that
will minimize that gap.
Yes, I do think that economic inequality is something that us Americans should take serious and make strides to fixing. Of course it’s not going to get better tomorrow or the next day but if more people took interest into actually caring about it then the future may hold change. As stated, i too agree with those views of Wilkerson and the videos of the charts and graphs representing a variety of different things.I do not agree with the statement above that because everyone does'nt make the same amount of money that causes people to go out and commit crimes , its rich people that steal and do some of the same heinous crimes. Sorry to sound like i'm knit-picking lol, but i had to find something i disagree with.
ReplyDeleteIn the Ted Talks video, Richard Wilkinson is not saying that every society should have people make the same amount of money, he's saying that countries with a higher economic equality have better outcomes in all aspects. Within his speech he goes on to talk about how both Sweden and Japan have great equality within their societies, yet they have very different ways that they get that inequality. "Sweden has huge differences in earnings, and it narrows the gap through taxation" while Japan "starts off with much smaller differences in earnings before tax" (Wilkinson). This proves that two completely different countries can both achieve economic equality, so who are you to say that the US cannot achieve that equality too? People being lazy has nothing to do with achieving economic equality. It's the government's laws and regulations that affect income equality. As Wilkinson mentioned earlier, Sweden has huge differences in their people's income (like the US does), but they have managed to achieve this thing that you say cannot happen in the US. I believe that every country in the world has the ability to accomplish economic equality, we just have to work for it. It's not just the people that effect inequality, it's mainly the government.
