Death of Pretty / Dadbod

In Pat Archbold's "Death of Pretty," Archbold explains female's lack of wanting to be pretty in this day and age. Women are aiming to be "hot" rather than portraying innocence, which is correct. Since the 60’s, there has been a decline in women’s wanting to be perceived as innocent beings. They attempt to appeal to men in more sexual manners. They believe that looking “hot” like celebrities will attract men, so they abandon the thought of being pretty. Even stating the fact that men prefer pretty over hot, women still feel the need to pursue the “hotness” consumable. Pat Archbold is correct in stating that men play a part in turning women into a commodity, but like he said “women should know better, and they once did.”

The Dadbod is definitely a trend that deserves its popularity. It allows men to live out the childhood fantasy of playing sports and eating pizza, while still being able to pick up attractive women. Not only are the men allowed to be happy with their body size, but the women actually enjoy their round partners. Not only are these men appraised with their cuddling efficiency, they are also acclaimed to be better in bed. Women enjoy being the more attractive person in the couple as well.

  1. I agree with what you said about how women are striving to be hot in our day and age rather than pretty. I also do feel that not only celebrities are to blame, but how the media portrays these people is at fault. On top of this it was a bit of a shock to me that most men prefer pretty over hot, but it's honestly a relief to hear. Now about the Dadbod article I have a differing opinion there. I believe the Dadbod is creating a double standard for men and women. While men can now get away with, and even get praised for, having a slightly imperfect physique women are left to "the pressure toward Barbie-doll sculpting."

  2. Have you ever thought that maybe the women in the 60s were not able to express their persona because they were forced into the "pretty" that society wanted them to be? Although the idea of pretty has gone down, it's not extinct. These days women are able to accept themselves more, and if they would rather look hot than pretty, then that's their own choice and they shouldn't be judged for how they want to look or who they want to be. Everyone is attracted to different kinds of people, and some may want pretty girls, but others do want hot girls too. As the dad bod is being more accepted, so should the way women want to portray themselves. Men are being allowed to accept their bodies, but women are still being criticized for what they want to do with their bodies. This is a type of double standard that need to be erased.
