Sayings of Society - Julian Shierry

Words such as “hot” and “dadbod” have begun to take society by storm and have been greatly popularized in today’s culture. While reading these two separate articles I have agreed with the conclusion that society accepts what is to be considered “popular” based on a majority belief within culture. While the fleeting idea of “pretty” has been vanishing for quite a while now and the more popular and more enticing idea of being “hot” has become a vastly sought after aesthetic. This however much like the dadbod is a subjective concept. Not everyone sees the societal standard as “hot” desirable and the media has overly projected this vastly over exaggerated thought throughout society. While these beliefs are rather subjective I still see these views as being true, because as a society we have formed them together. When it comes down to it, society creates a propaganda for the popular ideals within our culture. In college, for example, the Greek community has become quite the scene, this is even marketed through the notorious accounts of Total Frat Move and Total Srat Move which can be found on any form of social media. The article written by Spencer Kornhaber about dadbods even used Totalfratmove.com as a resource. These accounts popularize both ideals conveyed in both the “Dadbod” and the “Death of Pretty” article about how to conform to the popular beliefs and achieve the sought after perspective of what is popular now. It is because the conformist type in which society is that we allow these ideals to be popularized and worshiped by many; like all subjective trends do they too will fade away will the years pass. As for now these trends will stay as popular as society allows them to be.

  1. I agree that these trends will only remain popular if society keeps boosting them. As a society, we allow the media to portray any trend as a positive trend. And although not everyone sees societal standards as “hot”, the media takes this trend and runs with it like any other trend that graces social media. I also agree that social media provides a marketing aspect to college students. The accounts like Total Frat Move and Total Srat Move boost trends and allow them to be idolized and worshipped by students all over. As a society, we allow these trends to come into limelight and take over minds by storm.
