The Double Standard Debate

The great debate between the double standards between men and women is still going on, and will continue to do so as long as they do not kill each other off. Why is it that women have to have perfect bodies? And why is it that men chase after the “hot” women rather then approaching the cute ones?
According to the internet article, The Death of Pretty, women are chasing after the “hot” look to gain the attention of males and so that they may feel wanted. Women may end up feeling wanted, but after the man gets you and does his thing you just end up being a number because not all men want anything serious with the hot girl, in fact most just want the pretty and simple girl just like the article stated. While on the other hand men can look plain and simple and girls will like him just because he is nice and funny, not because he is “hot”.
That double standard brings me to the “dadbod” article, Dadbod: A New Word For A Timeless Physique. This article goes hand in hand with my previous paragraph because no matter what a man looks like he will find a woman. It truly is crazy to think that women strive for those lower pant sizes when you never hear a man say, “Hey, I really need to get my waist back to a 34.”. I still find it crazy to think that women go through all this trouble to care about how they look while men don’t put much thought into how they look.
The authors of both articles both had a hit or miss debate that we can side on easily from the very beginning, which is why I was so interested in both articles. But what both articles come down to is, what kind, type or shape of person do you prefer and want to be with?

  1. I agree with this being a double standard. It always has been and I'm afraid it will continue as such. I also agree with it really all coming down to personal preference. The "dadbod" article was more gentle with the phenomenon, while The Death of Pretty came off more of an accusation and it was kind of whiney and harsh. I think that instead of creating these categories that we should instead, appreciate and acknowledge all types of bodies. Body positivity is so important and I think that's such an important goal for society to reach.

  2. I agree with your idea about how all the two articles can be related in this why and I think that your ideas about how different men and women can be when it comes to appearance are very true as well. You have a good point about the article Dadbod: A New Word For A Timeless Physique, where you mentioned about how girls would spend a bunch of time on their appearance and boys usually care less. One thing that I do want to point out is that based on the author of The Death of Pretty, it is not only some women’s fault that make pretty dying, but also the point that our society value about women has shifted.
