Social Acceptance vs. Preference

Pat Archbold's article "The Death of Pretty", states that women need to go back to bringing out their better qualities rather than being a commodity. As he defines pretty as a combination of beauty and innocence which will make a man want to defend you. Yes, many girls and women today have the desire to look hot, however what gives us women this desire? We tend to get the urge to change our appearance due to a man’s perception and action toward women. I agree as Archbold states a man will find you more attractive and defendable if we portray innocence however men today tend to gravitate toward the hot girl more than the pretty girl. The “desire to be desired” does not make you any less of a woman.
Spencer Kornhaber’s article “Dadbod” expresses the social acceptance towards a man not having a 6-pack figure. Kornhaber uses various sarcastic remarks as he makes the statement that men with dadbods are not special but are “just like everyone else.”
Both articles seem to relate to social acceptance to many it is not okay to be a “hot girl” and it is now okay for a man not to have a 6- pack body. In my opinion your physique it is your decision. Everyone has their own preferences and social opinions of physique should not identify you or make you any more acceptable.

  1. I agree with your post, especially with the statement that "the desire to be desired doesn't make you any less of a woman." Everybody wants to feel wanted. I like how you state what gives girls the desire to look "hot" which, sadly, most of the time is guys. I also think its true that guys go for the "hot" girls more often than "pretty" girl. I liked the sarcasm in Kornhaber's essay as well. The truth is it really is up to a person to choose what they want their physique to be. Everybody likes what they like, its totally about opinion.

  2. I also completely agree with your opinion of the articles. You stated, "We tend to get the urge to change our appearance due to a man's perception and action toward women," and sadly it is the truth within our society. The feeling of being wanted and needed is crucial to every woman, and I that is the most likely reason why woman tend to choose "hot" over "pretty." However you choose to present yourself should be accepted by our society despite any flaw a woman or man should possess. Could not agree more with your statement.
